This was a session in the 20th Annual National Conference of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, ACM, held at Parliament House, Sydney on 6 November 2019.
The theme of the conference was the 20th anniversary of the people‘s affirmation of the Constitution led by “the constitutions fiercest defenders”, as Prime Minister Tony Abbott had dubbed ACM.
Welcomed by the parliamentary host, the Rev. the Hon Fred Nile, it began with the showing of interviews by Professor David Flint with the Hon John Howard and the Hon Tony Abbott on the subject of political leadership in the winning referendum campaign.
In subsequent sessions panellists included the Hon Lloyd Waddy QC, Peter King, Nick Hobson, the Hon Nick Minchin, the Hon. David Elliott, the Hon Ken Handley QC with the Neville Bonner Oration being given by the former High Court justice, the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG.
Mr Justice Kirby then handed credentials to ACM’s Young Ambassadors for the Australian Crown, Constitution and Flag, Alex Dore, Will Jefferies, Sean Jacobs, Daniel Lahood, Alex Baird and Alexandra Marshall.

20th NATIONAL CONFERENCE : THE WINNING CAMPAIGN Professor David Flint
Monarchy Australia TV
On 6 November 2019, ACM held their National Conference, the twentieth since the landslide defeat of the republic referendum nationally, in every state and 72% of federal electorates. The referendum was held on that day in 1999.
Former High Court Justice, the Hon Michael Kirby, who drafted the ACM Charter, delivered the Neville Bonner Oration. He then presented credentials to our wonderful young ACM Ambassadors for the Constitution, Crown and Flag, Alex Dore, Will Jefferies, Sean Jacobs, Daniel Lahood, Alex Baird and Alexandra Marshall.
Selected previously unseen Conversations with John Howard and Tony Abbott were shown.
Peter King, former Member for Wentworth before Malcolm Turnbull, was interviewed on his key role in calling together a galaxy of outstanding and diverse Australians who were to form Australians for Constitutional Monarchy.
Former Senator and Consul-General the Hon. Nick Minchin, who with John Howard designed the constitutional convention and referendum process, one which was eminently fair to both sides, was interviewed on his role there and later as one of three loyalist ministers in the ACM engine room which ensured the 1999 victory.
The Hon. David Elliott was interviewed on his crucial role as ACM National Campaign Director during the referendum campaign.
Former Justice Ken Handley, former Justice Lloyd Waddy, the Rev Hon Fred Nile, Wing Commander (Rtd) Nick Hobson spoke on the campaign and the crucial importance of the constitution.
Alister Henskens SC MP delivered a fascinating paper challenging the constitutionality of the use of plebiscites where the constitution prescribes a referendum.
The conference was advised by national convenor David Flint that ACM is drawing on its unique experience in delivering the 1999 victory while relying on the advice of a ‘digital dream team’ to ensure the latest technology will be used in any future campaign. This is following the advice of John Howard, on the importance of keeping ACM together for any such eventuality.
[ ACM is the only organisation of the many represented at the 1998 Convention to have held a National Conference in every year since the referendum.]

If LLoyd Waddy QC is the father of ACM, David Flint says Peter King is its grandfather,
Flint recalls phoning Peter King when he was President of the NSW Liberal Party in 1991 concerning the formation of the Australian Republican Moment. Over lunch they agreed on the need for a body to defend the role of the Australian Crown in our Constitution. King acted on that, inviting some leading citizens to join a committee which was to become an organisation Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, bringing together people a cross the political spectrum
A distinguished barrister, Peter King has appeared in a number of landmark cases which ended up in the High Court, often acting pro bono. He has been a member of the Sydney University Senate, Chair of the Australian Heritage Commission 1998-2001, Chair of the World Heritage Committee in 2001-01, and President of the World Heritage Bureau in 2001-02. He was elected the President of Sydney College of Divinity in 2010, a position he still holds.
As mentioned above he was President of the New South Wales Division of the Liberal party prior to the referendum campaign and subsequently, the member of Wentworth until 2004 after which you returned a private practice.
Speaking at ACM's 20th National Conference, Peter King speaks on the early years and the important role of ACM.
He remains an outstanding supporter of the constitutional system.

ACM 's 2018 National Conference was held in Parliament House Sydney on 3 October 2018 in the context of the alternative federal government’s obsessive determination to change Australia into a politicians’ republic through a convoluted series of at least two plebiscites, possibly a convention and then a referendum, an application of the principle reportedly favoured by Eurocrats, “The people must keep on voting until you get it right”.
The Conference once again featured an aspect of the Constitution which needs attention, unlike the provisions relating to the Australian Crown. This is an interpretation of the Constitution which arguably acts as a barrier to the drought proofing of the continent. In addition, another keynote address will be on the sovereignty of the nation and the role of the Crown.
Speakers included the leading broadcaster Alan Jones AO, who delivered the key note speech, the 28th Prime Minister the Hon Tony Abbott MP , the head of the Washington-based think tank ISSA, Gregory Copley whose important book , “Sovereignty in the 21st Century’’ was launched at the conference as well as Emeritus Professor David Flint. Among the distinguished panelists and attendees were Keith Windschuttle, Sophie York, Justice Kenneth Handley, broadcaster Ross Cameron, broadcaster Michael McLaren, Sophie York, Mayor Peter Cavanagh, Sean Jacobs, former Senator John Stone, Wing Commander (Rtd)Nick Hobson, John David Olsen, Nella Hall and Lt. Col (Rtd)Riccardo Bosi
ACM is the largest grassroots organisation, monarchist or republican. Leading a united front of monarchist organisations at the Constitutional Convention, it was the engine room of the 1999 No Case which won nationally, in every state and 72% of electorates. The oldest monarchist organisation, it is non-profit and has been audited every year since its incorporation. ACM called the largest and only successful demonstration in the debate to protest against the expulsion of the NSW Governors from Government House, campaigning until the Governor was returned.
Concentrating as it does on soundly argued principle and consistency, ACM is the only organisation in this debate, monarchist or republican, which has held a national conference in every year since the referendum.
